Description
If you have ever been to a Bengali ‘nemmontonno bari’ (celebration house) there is a high chance that you got to savour this delicious raw papaya chutney, which has a very peculiar nickname, plastic chutney!
No, it has nothing to do with plastic, but the name was derived from its glossy and translucent look. As raw papaya, also known as ‘pepe’ in Bengali, gets cooked in sweet and sour syrup, it turns translucent and gets a lustrous appearance. And if you have not tried it yet, there is no reason not to. Because we are bringing to your doorstep the real Pepe Chutney, made in the most authentic Bengali way.
Thinly sliced fresh raw papaya gets tempered in panch phoron, a unique mix of five whole spices available in West Bengal, along with other spices such as dry red chilli and salt. We make sure to use real mustard oil to bring out the essence of Bengali cuisine. A dash of lemon juice gives the recipe a very needed tangy cut from the sweetness of sugar. And the addition of saffron, melon seeds, cashew nuts, and raisins makes this raw papaya relish an elegant treat.
Wrap up your meal with this candied raw papaya chutney, the Bengali way with a side of ‘papor bhaja’ (fried papad) or pair it with your favourite snacks. If you are still not convinced to indulge in this Pepe Chutney, consider the health benefits of raw papaya. From heart, skin, to gut, it takes care of all.
